Daily Fabulousness 5-13

13 May

Another reason why Central Market is my favorite grocery store ( and so much more) is it’s new Passport to Argentina:

Here is a list of events I found at http://sidedish.dmagazine.com/2010/05/12/central-market-readies-for-passport-argentina/

—Cooking classes taught by world-renowned Argentinean chefs Francis Mallmann and Narda Lepes
—A “mini-version” of Buenos Aires’ San Telmo crafts and art market for gifts, trinkets, and apparel
—A Sampling of robust Malbecs and other varietals with world-famous Argentine vintners Susana Balbo, Laura Catena and Sebastian Zuccardi
—Tango lessons taught by Argentinean instructors
—Grilling “a la parrilla” outside the stores on patios and walkways, and featuring choripanes (a type of sausage sandwich) and South American beef
Central Market chefs preparing such authentic Argentinean treats as alfajores (a kind of confection) and empanadas (stuffed dough patties)

I personally cannot wait to go grab myself some empanadas! I hope that this is very successful so Central Market will do more Passports in the future such as Passport China, Passport France, Passport Russia, etc.

Daily Fabulousness 5-11

11 May

So, I literally almost died today. I went into a pet store near a resale shop as I was waiting for them to buy back some of my old clothes, expecting to see the usual puppies such as Yorkies, Poodles, etc that are at pet stores. BUT, instead what I saw was a PIG. Yes, there is a store near my house that sells BABY PIGS. It was so cute, I immediately began asking the man all kinds of questions about the miniature pig. It was all black, was using a litter box, and weighed 5 lbs. Something like this:

From : http://ann.learnpysanky.com/blog/2007-10-15-minipigs.jpg

I mean, look at that oinker!! SO sweet. I could just imagine myself living on a big property with a little sweet piglet and some chickens. But, clearly I was getting carried away. So, of course, when I went home, I began to research these sweet little piglets. Turns out they are quite popular with the celebrity crowd. Everyone knows that George Clooney had one for like 20 years. But, Paris Hilton and  Posh&Becks are also pig owners!! I mean how could you not love a face like this:

Pros of owning a pig:

They are the cleanest pets to have

They are smarter than dogs

Once they bond to you, they are very affectionate

Its unique&trendy

Cons of having a pig:

The grow up to look like this:

Also, apparently, because they are so smart, they need a lot of attention or they get lonely.

I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.

Daily Fabulousness (From May 9th)

11 May

I want to thank my sister, M, for turning my attention to Glamour Magazine’s What To Wear for Your Body Shape spread. Usually, I flip through these, depressingly admit that I am a pear, and move on. In the words of my sister – “The lady from the bridal shop called me about my bridesmaid dress, she said I was a 0 on top but a 6 on the bottom.” We laughed. Clearly, pear-shaped-ness runs in the fam. However, this time I saw a dress that I immediately became obsessed with and called all of the Anne Taylor Loft’s in my area looking for my size. I honestly believe this dress would look good on any shape- not just pear and some of my “boy shaped” friends bought it. It’s colors and print are so in for the summer and the one-shoulder look has never been hotter. I got the petite (even though I am far from) in order to make it tighter and shorter for a younger look.  I would consider pairing these my my amazing Cynthia Vincent for target flats or wedges. I’ve loved Cynthia Vincent and her 12th street collection for a long time now so I was thrilled to see them at Target. With the dress priced at $60 (there is a sale going on and please Anne Taylor is great quality so its really a bargain) and the wedges priced at $30- you’ve got a US Weekly caliber outfit for under $100. Gotta Love Summer!!

Let there be LIGHT.

“She would rather light a candle than curse the darkness, and her glow has warmed the world.” – A. Stevenson

While scent candles can get somewhat of a reputation for being for new aged hippies and crazy cat ladies, I believe like that candles are to a house like jewelry is to a nice outfit. The room just isnt complete without it. My roommate, A, got me instantly hooked on candles after living with her in the sorority house last year. There is nothing better than walking into a room that just smells amazing especially considering I have two dogs and a cat at home. I have convinced myself that a great candle instantly makes my day better, makes me study harder, and makes my room seem cleaner- delusional right???  I have spent so much time trying to find the perfect candle that I consider myself almost a connoisseur of them. So I thought I’d share my little research project  with y’all. My criteria for candles are: smell (not nauseating/migraineinducing), the saturation of the candle’s smell in the room (strong, weak, non existent), and burn quality (time, evenness of the wax).

Candle #1: Nest (Tie!)

I cannot rave enough about these candles. They are sold at Neiman Marcus as well as online. They have the absolute best fragrances and burn SO evenly. I almost believe God himself invented Nest Candles. My favorite smell is grapefruit but roommate, A, loves the Bamboo because it reminds her of her home. I seriously doubt you could go wrong with either.
This candle also has the most even burn ever so you have no waxy build up and last forever. I also don’t think its Christmas without the “Holiday” Nest candle, so perfectly christmas-y.  The only issue that I have with these candles is that the scent can be overpowering if you are not a candle person. The normal size is $32 but I think I may take the plunge and get a 3-wick $58 one. That is how much I love them!  Good for people who like a strong smelling/long lasting candle in large spaces. Bad for people who want a more colorful look as all the candles are white with a metallic stripe votive.

Candle #1 : Henri Bendel (Tied with Nest)

It was love at first sight with me and my Henri Bendel candle. I LOVE whimsical boxes like these and I am a big sucker for packaging and therefore was enamored. But what sold me was the deliciousness of the smell, the longevity of the burn time, and good price. I would really recommend the Peony (my fave flower) and the Grapefruit but thats just me! Plus these candles make me feel very metropolitan/Sex and the City because Henri Bendels reminds me of NYC. One word: Yum.  Good for people who like cleaner scents that are less strong. Bad for people who want a strong lasting scent

Candle #3: Tyler’s

From http://www.banglesandbagsonline.com/

I honestly don’t think I would have survived having the Swine Flu without my Birthday Cake scented Tyler’s Candle. The best part of these candles is how delicious they smell. It’s like walking into a house and thinking their is a cake in the oven. They also burn very evenly which is a huge plus for me. The leopard print lid is very cute as well, very much my twin. Great price point and the  fragrance is good without overpowering. Good for people who like perfuming/ non-citrus scents and sweet smelling (Vanilla-ish) fragrances. Bad for people who may want a more citrus, fresh scent

Candle #4:  Febreze

Okay I know that Febreze Candles may sound really strange but I am telling you they are great. They burn evenly, smell amazing, and they last a long time. The ideal situation to have a febreze candle is if you are cooking something that may linger or need something to freshen up your bathroom. They are really affordable and don’t have a huge FEBREZE logo on them (so everyone wont know that you in the need for some odor killers!) I even think the glass is trendy looking! The scents even get exotic with smells like Brazilian Carnival, Hawaiian Aloha, and Thai Dragon Fruit but they are a lot of traditional scents too! Can be very overpowering, use in large spaces!  Good for people who want non-obvious odor eating i.e pet owners & fish lovers and people who want a less expensive candle Bad for people who dont want a strong, very long lasting scent.

Candle #5: Seda France

You cannot go wrong with a Seda France Candle, I mean common Oprah had them on her show! Although, they are evenly priced with the Nest Candle and that’s a little tricky for me because I love NEST so much. The Japanese Quince is amazing, my roommate, A, burned it all the time when we lived in the sorority house (til it got confiscated for breaking rules…) My only issues with them is that they do not burn as evenly and if you are in a larger room, the smell gets really muted. I wouldn’t say they are the best but they are pretty damn good! Good for people who want trendy  design with a nice scent. Bad for people who dont want to spent $32 on a candle

Candle #6: Agraria

There is no doubt about it that Agraria is a master candle maker. I have the Blood Orange one at home and it really is incredible. But I’m a twenty-something year old and paying $75 for a 50 hour burn time is a little crazy. However, the hand cut crystal votive it comes in is almost worth the asking price. I mean hello, you can totally re-use that as a vase!  Good for people who want luxury.

Voluspa (can give me headaches!) & Pottery Barn (does not burn evenly) & Of course anything pumpkin scented

Still Wanna Try:

Lollia, Jo Malone, D.L & C.0, Ms. Meyers

Do Not Like:

Target, Glad, Bath&Body Works, Slatkin&Co, Drug Store Generic, Juicy, Anything Rose scented

11 May

Like every other twenty-something in America, I am obsessing over the Sex and the City 2 Trailer. Other than the obvious question on everyone’s mind (AIDENS BACK????), my other musing is how influential this movie will be on trends. I think Moroccan will be very in this summer to mirror the outfits the women rock in the movies. In the scene where they are all walking into the hotel, Carrie is wearing this gorgeous 1970s inspired, Halston Heritage Dress:

I mean, come on this dress is fab. (It’s $325- YIKES!) However, I feel like as a twenty-something year old living in Texas, this dress is just WAY over the top. My roommate, A, mentioned that her mom, Mama J, wants to get this dress and I think she would look absolutely stunning in it. But for me, although, its a classic brand, I would feel like Maleficant from Sleeping Beauty in that cape. Therefore, I have found myself a similar, more youthful alternative. Similar, yet different.

Property of http://www.lulus.com

I love the one shoulder, I love the color, and more than that I love that its only $33. Wowza.

Hello World! Take Two

11 May

In my typical way, I had mispelled “thoroughly” on my first blog and thanks I finally realized it! Of course, I didn’t check this. Typical. Anyways, I am going to copy and paste all of my previous blog entries onto this new blog so sorry for any inconvenience& that is why they all say May 11th. As my sister, M, says ” You definitely learned a lesson today.” Thanks J, you rock.

My pup

Today is a big day. It is my first day with my new blog! I started this blog a couple months back on blogger.com but I didnt particularly like the way that it was set up so I made the move to WordPress.com, hoping for better experience. Basically, I’m a twenty-something year old student and I’m taking the summer off to try to figure myself out. I love art, travel, cooking, and I want to be better at all of those things however I’m scattered, ditzy, and neurotic so we’ll see how it goes. I feel like my generation is so saturated with video games, graphics, 3D movies, and social media, that we barely get a chance to just sit and think. I want to be great, I want to be successful, and I want to change the world.  I just started reading Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and it has sent me off on my own quest for understanding, while maybe not spirituality. However, I kinda of doubt that I will find my peace through organized religion. I’m not going to talk much about religion in this blog because I want it to be more focused on food, art, design, etc. However, I will carry on this previous blogpost from my unsuccessful try at blogging on blogger.com

“Im I a very religious person? No, not really. BUT I believe a few earthly things can be religious. Mainly beauty, art, and kindness can save your soul. Currently, I’m obsessed with Spring Awakening after Melissa and I saw it at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas. In Spring Awakening- there is a song called “I believe” sung by the two main characters, Melachoir and Wendla (Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff for all you Glee-buffs). In “I believe”- the lyrics sing, ”I believe there is love in heaven. I believe all will be forgiven.Sometimes, it would be nice if everyone would truly live their lives in the manner of Jesus. We live on this world to love, appreciate, and care for each other. Lets leave the judgments up to Jesus. We have no power to say who are sinners and who are saints. Just live your life in the best possible way and let others live there’s as well. And who knows- maybe you’ll find inspiration and religion, where you least expect it.  I believe.” In the last year, my dear grandfather and my friend, Arun, both passed away. I frequently have dreams about both and wonder where they are. My grandfather was a true giant among man and will never ever be replaced in my heart but he was 99 and lived a very full and fulfilling life. However, Arun had an accident and passed away the week before his 21st birthday. was a truly UNIQUE person and I really do mean it. You know when people die and everyone is like OMG- I love love love (insert name here), they were just the greatest/smartest/funniest/sweetest/most incredible person ever! And your like, I want people to talk about me like that when I’m dead, I should just stage my own funeral ala Tom Sawyer… But, in actuality the person could be a crazy or nutjob and people would still talk like that. Arun was a true individual and beyond intelligent. When we were all trying to just BLEND on the first day of high school, he came to school with a BRIGHT pink mohawk. He was just so individual in a way that if anyone else tried to replicate- they would just be a J.D Sallinger Phony.

Anyways, I picked the name “Throughly Modern Maggie” as a homage to “Throughly Modern Millie.” Throughly Modern Millie is a musical about a  girl and her madcap adventures, which I’m kinda of hoping for through this blog. Anyways- hope you enjoy the ride as much as I will.
