Adapting

13 May

Some of the best movies have been made from books- Shawshank Redemption, The Wizard of Oz, The Graduate,  The Godfather, Schindler’s List, Princess Bride, Scarface, Gone with the Wind, The Notebook, The Devil Wears Prada, etc. I also love any movies made from Roald Dahl:  Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (obviously the original), James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. However, some of the worst movies ever made have been made from books too- Cat and the Hat, My Sister’s Keeper, Lovely Bones, and that list goes on… Usually I find movies adapted from books to be disappointing. Usually I’ve wanted something more and left kinda unfulfilled about the story. However, some of my favorite books are coming out as movies soon! Here’s a list of some that I’m very excited to see:

1. Something Borrowed

From IMDB.com- “A story about a Manhattan attorney who becomes involved with her best friend’s fiancé.” It’s staring Kate Hudson so it will probably be really predictable and cheesy just like Bride Wars or anything else she’s done since Almost Famous.  BUT, it also has John Krasanski in it- who i LOVE and who did an amazing job in It’s Complicated, so I think it will be worthwhile to check out.  Comes out in 2011.

#2: Eclipse

Okay, I’m definitely not a huge fan of either the Twilight book series or the movies. I feel too old for them but I’m still interested in knowing the hype. I can’t say I really got into the books very much- I got too bored in the 1st one and quit, did not like the 2nd one at all, began to enjoy the 3rd, and actually liked the 4th. The real reason that I am interested is that I saw Robert Pattinson once in person and he was so handsome I couldn’t help but start reading the books. Now, I’m interested to see where they go with the story on the big screen. Even if the movie sucks, at least its an excuse to get out of the Texas heat. Comes out June 2010

#3: Life of Pi

I LOVED Life of PI. However, I’m not quite sure how this will become a movie adaptation as he spends his time on a raft with what he thinks are animals. I am imaging this to be Castaway meets the ocean. Coming out in 2012

#4: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows

There is no book series that I can say I love more than Harry Potter. I love anything British, anything magical, and I am a big fairy tale person. When my family visited a castle in the Scottish countryside, I almost died of shock&happiness to see that it was the filming location of several scenes in Harry Potter movies. This book was definitely the best and I can’t wait to see what they do with it. They are making the movie into 2 parts because of how much information there is. AND, at the first chance I get, I’m heading to Orlando to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park.

#5: Eat, Pray, Love

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m only halfway through Eat, Pray, Love for the 2nd time (neither time I have made it to the Love portion) I kinda think that the protagonist isn’t very relatable and is bratty. BUT, i think this will be a fantastic adaptation because of the amazing settings- Italy, India, and Indonesia (Bali) and because it stars one of my all time favorite actresses- Julia Roberts! Comes out in August around the time TCU sorority rush begins. Sounds like a great movie for me and my roommate AB to go see during recruitment to de-stress!

For the Elementary Teacher in Me:

Property of Dr.Seuss

The Lorax and The Giver are two of the greatest pieces of juvenile&children’s literature out there. I cannot wait for these to be released. Great stories with Great Messages.

I am also excited about:

Howl (Life of Allen Ginsberg)

Fahrenheit 451

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh (only because I LOVED this in 5th grade)

The Adventures of TinTin (my cousin did the sound!)
